Meet Ruth Quizhpe. She’s not a chef who gets written up in glossy magazines, but her vital work ensures that the 2,000-plus students at the largest middle school in New York City eat every day. With 1,800 public schools and some one million students, the New York City public school system is the biggest in the United States. How does the system feed all of the students every day?
“On the Job With Priya Krishna” is a series about labor and the people who shape what we eat and how we eat, and whose jobs often go unseen. Tune in.

It's annoying how the kids rates and opinions on the food are based on their bad food habits. Pizzas, hamburguers are great now and then but not really everyday food, stop feeding children high processed food and teach them the importance and taste of healthy food! I appreciate the hard work and care of these women 🙂
Wow
Thank you so much for the workers who fed me back in high school 😢
As a health inspector i had inspected dozen of school kitchens and by far they were my favorite. These ladies keep our kids going and keep our children’s food safe <3 love them!! Thank you lunch ladies ❤ you do so much!
''The food is much healthier now'' Yet they serve fried cheese as the main dish lol. What the hell were they servering before? Buckets of oil?
It's time to give them a raise!!!
Ms. Ruth and her team deserve a luncheon in their honor to celebrate their willingness and commitment to the students.
Can we make a go fund me for Ruth PLEASE ?! ❤
This one was emotional for me!!! So many memories and Priya did so well with it! Love love love this series! 💕
unhealthy, bland crap
omg this is food? they feed children?? on a daily basis??? poor kiddos, fat or dead kiddos in the near future! why cant americans cook, esp with fresh food
They don't seem to be cooking anything. They are assembling stuff.
Brilliant work. The kind of recognition these women deserve. It's very unfortunate, though, to see that the children are served on disposable one-use trays, with plastic cutlery and the fresh fruit (pears) are each indivually wrapped in cling film. Aside from the environmental cost, doesn't that cost more that to use real plates, trays and cutlery ???
So much single use plastic being used for something that will be consumed shortly.
Heartwarming interview!
Had a lunch lady in my school back then and dind't give her much appreciation. Now I'm in University and I'm so thankful for them
Let’s keep it real free free has always been a hit or miss depending on the menu that day
Boy the pbj will milk always save the day thank you 🙏🏾
Great video, she knew exactly what to ask and that lady is awesome, she loves what she's doing.
I feel like when you're feeding a lot of people in the USA you'll almost always find someone in the kitchen speaking Spanish. Sad we don't acknowledge that more. I appreciate this episode.
My mom was a lunch lady at my elementary school. They didn't cook, just heated pre made food, but it was still a hustle.
Priya’s Spanish is on point!!!!!!
This is amazing
I will always say this. Never disrespect someone in food service
Beautiful
Brings me back to middle school when I relied on the school meals since we were strapped from the recession hitting my family hard. The lunch cook was one of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet. Rip Mr. Moss, you changed lives.
Our lunch ladies at my schools growing up were always so special 🥹
