MS Dhoni has become the first cricketer to play 200 Indian Premier League matches for Chennai Super Kings. Overall, this is Dhoni’s 230th match in the IPL but he played 30 of those for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were under suspension.
MS Dhoni reached the milestone of 200 IPL matches for CSK when he walked out to the toss with Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis on Wednesday. Dhoni is the leading run-scorer for CSK against RCB.
Besides MS Dhoni, only Virat Kohli has played over 200 matches for the same franchise. Kohli has featured in 218 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore so far since his debut in 2008.
No other player comes close to the number of matches MS Dhoni has played for Chennai Super Kings. Suresh Raian, who went unsold in the 2022 player auction, featured in 176 matches for the Super Kings. Ravindra Jadeja, who relinquished his captaincy a few days back, has played 142 matches so far.
MS Dhoni holds the record for most IPL matches for any side but Virat Kohli, who is fourth on the list, has played all his 218 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
MS Dhoni, one of the most celebrated captains in world cricket, has led CSK to four IPL championships. Under MS Dhoni, CSK won the IPL in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021.
MS Dhoni had given up the CSK captaincy and the franchise named Ravindra Jadeja as his successor two days before the start of IPL 2022. However, after a disastrous run, Jadeja handed the captaincy back to Dhoni a day before CSK’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
After resuming his duties as skipper, MS Dhoni oversaw a comfortable win for Chennai Super Kings over Sunrisers Hyderabad and clarified the captaincy fiasco. In a post-match interview with Star Sports, Dhoni said Jadeja knew he would lead CSK last season and that he had enough time to prepare. However, Dhoni added he was happy to take over as captain again so Ravindra Jadeja could focus on his batting, bowling and fielding.
Under MS Dhoni, CSK had reached the final of the inaugural edition of the IPL but they lost to Rajasthan Royals. In 2010, Dhoni led the Super Kings to their first IPL triumph, which they defended successfully in 2011.
After the spot-fixing scandal broke, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two years.
In 2016, MS Dhoni was roped in by Rising Pune Supergiant. He played 14 matches for the side in 2016 and 16 in the 2017, when RPS reached the final.
Back at the helm as captain after the ban on CSK was lifted, MS Dhoni led them to another title win. In 2020, CSK were knocked out of the race for the playoffs but they came back strongly to win the IPL in 2021.
MS Dhoni has been in good touch with the bat in IPL 2022. Even as the rest of the CSK batting line-up failed, Dhoni hit a half-century against Kolkata Knight Riders in the season opener. Against Mumbai Indians, Dhoni turned back the clock with a vintage display to secure a thrilling victory for CSK.
